Peter Rabbit was REAL.
Author Beatrix Potter had a rabbit named Peter Piper. He could do tricks like jumping through hoops, playing the tambourine and ringing bells, just like her famous fictional character, Peter Rabbit.
She also had another rabbit called Benjamin Bouncer and a hedgehog called Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle.
The inspiration behind Peter Rabbit.
The Tale of Peter Rabbit was inspired by an illustrated letter Beatrix wrote to a little sick boy. The letter described four rabbits – Peter, Flopsy, Mopsy and Cottontail, and their mother. The boy loved the illustrations so much that, his mother asked Beatrix to turn them into a book.
Peter Rabbit is the oldest licensed literary character.
When Beatrix realized how popular Peter Rabbit had become, she designed and sewed a doll version of him. She patented this doll, making him the world’s oldest licensed literary character.
